Origin Story

We left large institutions to build the embedded stack we wished we'd had.

In 2011, four engineers — two from Bosch's automotive controls group, one from Intel's embedded architecture lab, and one from NASA JPL's flight software team — quit their respective posts in the same week. They were spending more time integrating vendor stacks than solving the underlying problem, and the off-the-shelf platforms of the era were not designed for fleets that had to survive ten years on a factory floor.

They set up shop in a converted garage in north Boulder with three goals: write a maintained Yocto distribution tight enough to ship in production, build an orchestration layer that treated every node as a first-class citizen rather than a thin client, and stay close enough to the hardware to debug a firmware fault without a ticket queue.

Fifteen years later those three commitments still drive every release. PEL now ships pre-validated on fourteen System-on-Module families. The orchestration software manages 38,400+ nodes across four continents. And our engineers still co-design with your team from proof-of-concept through fleet rollout — typically cutting time-to-production by eleven months versus in-house builds.
